Winter Wrap-Up and Spring Season Start
Over the February Break, our winter sports teams competed in the North Coast Section playoffs. Women’s soccer, who finished third overall in league, was seeded #14 in the playoffs and traveled to #3 seeded Marin Catholic for the first round. Though the Phoenix fell short, losing 2-0, they battled until the final whistle and proved to be reputable opponents in a tough winter soccer season. Women’s basketball finished third overall in league and went on to receive a #7 seed in the North Coast Section playoffs. Injuries left the team shorthanded for the first round, and the team fell to Sonoma Academy.
With only one senior on the roster, the women’s basketball team is poised to build on their success next season. After a difficult start to their season, men’s basketball showed great perseverance and resilience by finishing third overall in league and qualifying for the North Coast Section playoffs. Receiving the #11 seed, the Phoenix traveled to #6 International for the first round. Led by senior captain Nigel Scott, the Phoenix upset the Jaguars 48-46. Though the team was eliminated in the Quarterfinals by San Domenico, their strong finish to their season will propel them to pick-up where they left off next year.
Men’s baseball opened their season with a 1-1 start, defeating Technology School on Tuesday and falling to Berean Christian on Wednesday. In their win over Technology, sophomore pitcher Davis McGanney struck our eight batters in four innings, senior co-captain Will Yi batted 3 for 3 with two RBIs, and senior captain Samin Bhalla went 3 for 4 with four RBI’s and two stolen bases.
Golf competed in their first league match on Tuesday, facing St. Joseph Notre Dame at the Rossmoor golf course. Lead by senior Owen Cannizzo, who shot a 43, the Phoenix defeated the Pilots.They’ll look to continue their success in league against Athenian on Tuesday, March 3rd at Rossmoor, tee time 3:00pm.
Women’s lacrosse scrimmaged Drew School on Wednesday. The 2020 spring season marks the first season of women’s lacrosse for both schools, which created an atmosphere of excitement and thrill for both teams and their fans. Bentley showed poise and composure in a brand new setting, performing well behind the leadership of sophomore Sabrina Lifter. Their first game of the season will be played at home on Tuesday, March 3rd at 3:45pm.
Our men’s tennis team hosted Lick-Wilmerding on Wednesday. With only three upper classmen on the roster and many students participating in tennis for the first time, the Phoenix put up a great fight against a much more experienced opponent, dropping a tight 4-3 match. Bentley won at the #1 singles (Michael Hahn) #2 singles (Michael Krijanovski), and #2 doubles (Julius Barnes, Leo Floros) positions.
Coming off a tremendous 2019 season, which resulted in a historic NorCal Runner-Up finish, the men’s volleyball team opened their season against DeAnza on Tuesday afternoon. The junior varsity team competed through every point, and though they lost 2-0, they exhibited a lot of potential in their young team that will serve them well as they continue to build this season. The varsity team defeated De Anza 3-0, with younger players stepping in to fill starting positions.
