Life Science Classes Created Fashion Last Week: DNA Necklaces!
A representative from “Bio-Rad” came to visit Mr. Ryan’s Life Science classes last week. Bio-Rad kits were used to lead students through extracting their DNA. After swabbing their cheek cells students mixed the cells with enzymes and detergents to break through the outer parts of the cells and extract the DNA. Using eye droppers, they carefully placed their DNA into a tiny vile which was turned into a pendant necklace. Students have been in the middle of a unit on DNA and genetics, allowing everyone to see what they have been studying. They had a lot of great things to say about the activity:
