Take a Look at Some of the Mini-term Fun That Happened at the Upper School!
No Budget Filmmaking, taught by Ms. Simpson & Mr. Grili, was a high-octane thriller of a week! Students had five days to make five-minute films, and on that first Monday morning, the countdown was ticking! They wrote scripts, shot scenes on location, and edited sound together. Drawing on talent from grades 10th-12th, Bentley's future Hollywood stars collaborated on two movie projects: a psychological drama called "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and a campus horror titled "The Locker Room." Students faced many wide-ranging challenges of filmmaking--one group hiked on location carrying camera equipment and a drone while the other had to use practical effects to bring their locker room entity to life--and ultimately produced two impressive cinematic masterpieces. The Extreme Epic Ultimate Day Hikes experience with Dr. Walker & Mr. Lymburn reached the summits of Mt. Livermore, Mt. Tamalpais, Mt. Diablo, and North Peak. Students stormed the trails of the Dipsea and Briones through snow and hail storms and blazing sunlight. Take a look at some of the photos in this album.
Glassblowing & Other Adventures with Mr. Muksian embarked on daily trips to Mare Island, a historic military site transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity on the edge of San Pablo Bay. Students practiced glass blowing from master artist Doug Brown, mold making, and slip casting with ceramicists from TreeBed Design, learned about complex woodworking techniques at Western Dovetail, and toured the studios and workshops of the artists, tinkerers, inventors, and pranksters at Obtanium Works. Between studio sessions, they explored the island's rich history, from the dry docks along the Napa River to viewing the Western United States' largest collection of Tiffany glass in St. Peter’s Chapel. Additional adventures included scenic hikes on EBMUD wilderness trails and a trip to San Francisco to explore sculptures at the De Young Museum caves at low tide on Baker Beach. The 9th Grade Mini-Term was a week filled with service and adventure. It was a blast! Students did amazing things, such as cleaning up Lake Merritt, volunteering at the City Team soup kitchen, going on a cross-town hike in SF, and completing a ropes course in the rain. Mr. Kegg & Mr. Kallaby’s Exploring Bay Area Conservation by Water and Land Mini-term class spent the week exploring conservation areas in the Bay on foot, bike, and by kayak. Students hiked over 30 miles, biked all around Angel Island, and kayaked below the Golden Gate Bridge, getting different perspectives on the natural habitat that surrounds them while learning about and discussing different levels and practices of land and waterway conservation.
