Socratic Smackdown for Sevens

Is it better for a leader to be loved or feared? 7th grade continues their study of the European Renaissance in history class.

Last week’s classes focused on the impact of Niccolo Machiavelli and his book, The Prince. The Prince is a discourse on political philosophy and was considered an instruction guide for “new princes” (leaders).

Students read an excerpt from this text and followed guided prompts to help analyze Machiavelli’s ideas on how a leader should rule. In small groups, students addressed the question of whether it is better for leaders to be feared or loved. Students then had the opportunity to share their own insights on the topic during the first Socratic smackdown.

The Socratic style of classroom discussion encourages deep critical thinking; everyone uses their voice in the conversation and everyone provides feedback to classmates after each round.
